What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a frustrating condition whereby patient’s experience a subjective, persistent noise in one (or both) of their ears. Tinnitus can be caused by number of conditions and should be investigated if it doesn’t resolve spontaneously.

What are the symptoms of tinnitus?

Tinnitus can be present in one ear (unilateral) or in both ears (bilateral). The tone of the tinnitus varies; often it is a high-pitched sound but it may also be low pitched or pulsatile.  Tinnitus may be associated with hearing loss, blocked ear or vertigo.

How do you treat tinnitus?

Treatment is possible for tinnitus and will vary depending on the underlying cause. Patient’s will often be required to have a hearing test and possibly an MRI as part of their investigations.
